Google Just Opened a Free Business Hub. Here's What It Actually Means for Your Small Business
By Leon Walker · 20 October 2026

On 20 October 2026, Google announced something every small business owner should at least know about. Inside Gemini, Google's AI assistant, there is now a dedicated business hub. Think of it as one place where you connect the tools you already use: your Google Business Profile, Google Ads, Xero, Canva, Shopify and more. From there you can create marketing images that actually match your brand, get plain-English answers about your money from the spreadsheets and receipts you already have, and see what your customers are saying about you. Google says it is rolling out globally over the coming days, and the core of it is free to use.
That's the news. Now the part that matters.
Why this is worth your attention
Because if you run a small business, your scarcest resource is not money. It's time. In announcing the hub, Google shared the story of a ceramicist in France who uses Gemini to write her product descriptions, newsletters and social posts, saving two to three hours every single day. Two to three hours. That's the school run covered, or the quiet hour at the end of the day when you finally get to do the actual work you started the business for.
Then there's the cost shift. Brand-quality marketing images used to mean paying a designer, and a clear picture of your finances used to mean an evening squinting at a spreadsheet, or paying an accountant for an hour of their time. Both now sit in a free hub next to your Google Business Profile. Small firms make up 99% of UK businesses, and this is the first time the biggest companies in the world have aimed this much free machinery squarely at them. That is genuinely new.
But here's the honest flip side, and it's the part nobody puts in the announcement. Your competitors get the same free tools on the same day you do. When everyone has access to the same kit, the advantage moves somewhere else. It moves to the businesses that never miss a call, that reply to an enquiry within minutes instead of at the end of the week, that take a booking at 9pm on a Sunday while their competitor's phone rings out. A hub can polish your marketing. It can't pick up the phone.
What should you actually do with this?
One thing this week. Not ten things. Open the Gemini app on your phone and look for the new business section over the coming days. Connect just one thing to start: your Google Business Profile. Then ask it one question: read my reviews and tell me the three things customers praise most, and the one thing they complain about. Ten minutes, no cost. Use the answer to tighten the description on your profile so it pulls in more of the trade you actually want. If you use Xero, connect it next and ask for a plain-English summary of last quarter. Then stop. One tool connected properly beats a dozen half-set-up and abandoned, which is the quiet graveyard of most small business software.
Where we come in
The big platforms are handing small businesses powerful tools, mostly free. What they don't hand you is the setup, the wiring into how you actually operate, or the parts that still need doing while you're on a job: the call answered first time, the enquiry chased within the hour, the diary filled without you lifting a finger. That's the work we do at Rutspin. We build AI voice agents and simple, sensible automation for UK small and service businesses, fitted around how you already run things rather than making you learn ours.
If you want to see what that looks like for your business, watch our free AI demo video at rutspin.com or social.rutspin.com. It takes five minutes, and it may be the most useful five minutes your business spends this month.
